S.U.V (Sports Utility Vehicle)

S.U.V's - either you love them or you hate them, there can be no liking them. This is the same case with me, people either love me or hate me. I have been an SUV afficianado since I could remember. The first one to the present one, all my wheels have been four wheel offroaders, the first one being the Mahindra MM540 and the present one being the Toyota Rav4.

A lot has been said about SUV's and I would like to demystify the myths behind the tales of the sports utility vehicles. It is said that in case of a head on collision with a SUV the probability of fatalities in the other vehicle is quite high but then again when I am having a head on collision with another vehicle, whose life is more important? Mine or his?.... mine of course. I concede, the propensity of SUV's to roll-over in case of accidents is comparatively higher than normal salons but with the latest innovations and anti-roll cages the adverse effects can be mitigated.

SUV's are also accused of polluting the environment. Granted an average SUV consumes more fuel than your average salon but why are SUV's isolated out in this regard? Why do Ferrari's and Mclaren's with 12 cylinders run scot free while your poor SUV's with 6 cylinders are singled out as the causes of global warming?

Agreed, the operating costs of a SUV is also comparatively higher than their puny salon counterparts but people still buy them for its our choice, the same choice that smokers have in spending their hard earned money in killing themselves, but hey we SUV lovers just spend it on wheels and at most we will kill someone else and not ourselves.

If you were to argue with me that SUV's are not fast, I would request you to take a look at the new Porsche Cayenne, this baby can go from 0-100 in around 5 seconds flat or the new Range Rover which is the personification of class on wheels. So all your old arguments against the purchase of a SUV are passe.

Anti SUV sites like Fuh2.com amuse me, they state that men who buy SUV's are lacking in some part of their anatomy and my response to such morons is - "balls to you mate" (pun intended)... the reason for buying a SUV is just attitude, predominantly the belief that might is right. For me personally I really enjoy the elevated driving position and also the big cargo area for all my goodies. Now if you think I am the poster boy for the SUV's that you would like to kill; what are you going to do about it? Run me over in your Mini-Cooper??.. I think not!!

  • Suvs kill and should be banned

By Anonymous lampard, at 4/11/2005 12:43:00 PM

  • So do regular cars - when the drivers are drunk and/or careless! In fact, anything could be turned into a weapon, including the human body.

By Blogger Irina Tsukerman, at 4/11/2005 01:07:00 PM

  • so does smoking, lampard.. lets ban that first...

I would like to add to what Irina said, small cars also kill and in probability the occupants of both cars unlike SUV's

  • I don't care for SUVs..nothing to do with the environment though. SUVs are hard to see around and take up too much space in parking lots. They also have an annoying tendency to try to ram me into guard rails because oops, the driver can't see my small little car.

It's true that semi-trucks are also annoyingly huge, but there aren't as many of those and besides, they are big for a reason--SUVs are big for no reason. Truckers have to take special safety courses and apparently it pays off: I've never had a trucker nearly ram me into a guardrail.

If *I* did something stupid like merge left without looking, and *I* rammed somebody into a guard rail, we'd both probably be alright. If an SUV driver pulls something like that, he'd be fine but I'd be dead. SUV "safety" comes at the expense of people in normal cars. Whereas somebody in a mid-sized Volvo is perfectly safe without endangering me.

  • To add to c.b., it always seems that fresh snow leads more SUVs to the ditches than other vehicles (no stats to back this, just an observation). This is probably more due to over-confidence of the person behind the wheel than any fault of the SUV itself. People driving SUVs shouldnt fool themselves into believing that SUVs maneuver and stick better than saloons.

Other than the addictive elevated driving position and a false sense of security, I can't think of any advantages in owning an SUV for daily driving. Maybe some SUV lovers can shed some light on that topic more than tell us SUV haters why not to hate.

  • CB, CB, CB ... I visited your blog,I like your style of writing though not your beliefs... dont be on the other side of the fence, when I make my evil empire I, I offer you a prominent place in my cabinet... come in come in my friend.

and oh CB, buy a SUV and then you CAN do something stupid like merging to the left without looking ;-)

Vik, aas you said SUVs do give you this sense of security, the elevated driving position alone accounts for the major reason for owning a SUV, SUVs also have increased boot area, and not to mention more ground clearance, the probability of you scraping against something on the ground is virutally nil on a SUV.

By Blogger injinuity, at 4/12/2005 02:02:00 AM

  • security, elevated position blah blah...we plan to sell our suv soon :) Doha has a whole lot of them and its time i get to a smaller car.

  • hey jinu & vinu rhymes!

By Blogger wookie, at 4/12/2005 03:30:00 PM

  • Easy for you to say buddy, coz you're living in the middle east where oil prices haven't changed in eons. Over here in the states, we're paying through our noses.

You did bring up some interesting arguments ...

"Why do Ferrari's and Mclaren's with 12 cylinders run scot free while your poor SUV's with 6 cylinders are singled out as the causes of global warming?"

Because Ferrari's and Mclaren's account for minimal percentage of the total number of cars - follow ?

"It is said that in case of a head on collision with a SUV the probability of fatalities in the other vehicle is quite high but then again when I am having a head on collision with another vehicle, whose life is more important? Mine or his?"

And what if there were no SUVs ? Both parties would suffer considerably lesser injuries. I'd consider that to be a better scenario. The greater good, I think they call it.

"but hey we SUV lovers just spend it on wheels and at most we will kill someone else and not ourselves. "

You're harming the environment, which indirectly harms you ... etc etc .. again, you argument is not entirely true.

"If you were to argue with me that SUV's are not fast, I would request you to take a look at the new Porsche Cayenne, this baby can go from 0-100 in around 5 seconds flat "

Can you afford a Porsche Cayenne ? Can the average person looking to buy a car afford a Porsche Cayenne ? I think not. So I don't know how this example applies. Besides, if you spent that much money on a tractor it would do 0-100 in 5 seconds too. So I don't really see your point.

"For me personally I really enjoy the elevated driving position and also the big cargo area for all my goodies."

Yep - just what an SUV needs, a big cargo area - so you can fill it up, make the thing even heavier (thus, raising the center of gravity), and make the chances of flipping even higher.

"elevated driving position" - are you short ? or do you like looking down at the road ?

"the reason for buying a SUV is just attitude, predominantly the belief that might is right."

I respect the attitude. But 20 years from today, when there oil reserves are limited - and it literally costs an arm and a leg to get any gas - will you still be able to keep this attitude ?

In unrelated news I read the other day that used Toyota Priuses are selling for more than new ones (classic, too much demand - not enough supply). Now thats a trend I'd like to see.

    cheers

  • and oh CB, buy a SUV and then you CAN do something stupid like merging to the left without looking ;-)

I can always merge into the bike lane. I'm like 97% sure that I'd win that fight.

I wonder if bikers think I'm a jerk. I must look like like a wasteful bastard to them. "Ooh, four cylinders? High-roller."

    By Anonymous C.B., at 4/12/2005 08:06:00 PM

  • anon, a well thought out reply but the discussion would have been more interesting if we knew the person behind the post... next time leave a name will ya....

your first argument, well I give in, in the middle east, fuel prices are not an issue, I think I pay more for water than for fuel.. so had I been in some other part of the globe, a bi SUV might have pinched my pockets.

<<< Because Ferrari's and Mclaren's account for minimal percentage of the total number of cars - follow ?
--- well its not about the percentage of the cars on the road, one law one world, if you are against gas guzzlers you should be against all types of gas guzzlers irrespective of their numbers on the roads.

<<< And what if there were no SUVs ? Both parties would suffer considerably lesser injuries.
--- If you had an SUV, you would suffer even less injuries, isn't that the greater good??

<<< You're harming the environment, which indirectly harms you ... etc etc .. again, you argument is not entirely true.
--- People harm the environmnet in mnay other ways, why are the SUV's isolated out and thats what I can't comprehend.

<<< "elevated driving position" - are you short ? or do you like looking down at the road ?
--- Its not that I am short, I am 5.10 and thats average, and no its not that I like looking down at the road... I dont like looking down at inanimate objects.. its just that I like looking down at people muahahahaha (evil laugh)

<<< In unrelated news I read the other day that used Toyota Priuses are selling for more than new ones (classic, too much demand - not enough supply). Now thats a trend I'd like to see.
--- Really?,,, thats news to me, its nice to see that even toyotas can enjoy cult status... cool eh?

C.B, good one mate, but you are still on the other side of the fence, jump over it mate, drive over it mate.. but for heavens sake cross

By Blogger injinuity, at 4/12/2005 10:20:00 PM

  • Maybe they'll come up with an alternative energy source one day, and gas-guzzling won't even be an issue!

By Blogger Irina Tsukerman, at 4/13/2005 08:25:00 AM

  • I too used

By Blogger Alexis Simonae, at 4/14/2005 06:45:00 AM

  • I was/am/will be a SUV fanatic. I can even afford one. But i will be happy with the prius's and hybrid civis's of today.

While friends of mine (on a SUV) pay twice what i pay for gas for the same distnce travelled and cry about it, i never regret my choice.

As long as i have a small family and dont have to tow a boat, SUVs will always remain a backburner.

By Blogger Alexis Simonae, at 4/14/2005 06:59:00 AM

  • someday you might have to tow a boat you know... ;-) and hey alexis how come you stopped blogging mate?

By Blogger injinuity, at 4/14/2005 11:40:00 AM

  • Obviously I hate SUVs, and I do fear them.

By Blogger Gothamimage, at 4/16/2005 10:43:00 PM

  • Why "obviously"?

By Blogger Irina Tsukerman, at 4/17/2005 03:42:00 PM

  • exactly.. could you care to elaborate on the 'obviously' part ;-)

By Blogger injinuity, at 4/17/2005 10:47:00 PM

  • cool down machiavelli...
I would like to know, do you live in the suburbs? because living downtown (in a big city) has an overwhelming influencing on method of transportation.

    By Blogger Khalij-Khazar, at 4/22/2005 06:17:00 PM

  • K.K, Machiavelli eh?...been there, done it ;-)

well I do live in the suburbs but it doesn't make much difference for me, if the parking is full I just drive over the payment and park.. muahahhaah (evil laugh)

By Blogger injinuity, at 4/22/2005 10:10:00 PM
